In Spain, the INIA (National Institute for Agricultural and Food Research and Technology) is a public research organization of the State Secretariat for Science, Development and Innovation in the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness.

INIA participates in a variety of research programs related with the agrifood sector. At the INIA’s Department of Environment, the group for Endocrine Disruption and Toxicity of Contaminants (DETC) is interested in the study of mechanisms underlying the toxic effects of contaminants on organisms, particularly fish, with special emphasis on endocrine disruptors and nanoparticles. Fish and mammalian cell lines serve for the detailed characterization of these mechanisms. Observed markers and/or alterations are then studied in fish captured in the wild or exposed to selected contaminants in the laboratory. Chromatographic and mass spectrometric techniques are used to characterize exposure media or field samples.
